"We Are All Friends" is a commentary on life. In one way or another we are all friends, somewhat related and responsible to each other. We share this world we live in so why are we not "ALL FRIENDS" and a lesson that we should respect.

Today and as I move forward, I am going to try to be more like a friend.

During October 2009, I visted the Arches National Park in Utah. This image struck out at me in it emphasis on just how small we are in the grand scheme of things. I've posted this in color a long time ago, but it has always gnawed at me as if something else was waiting to be done. Today I developed in B&W and now I feel I may have captured its real majesty.

Red Shoes was taken Sunday Morning at 7:25 AM IN Manhattan. The congregation is right outside of the Bowery Mission. The image is taken without focusing on anyone and camera draped around my neck and at my waist. It clear the RED SHOES is taking issue with my invasion of his territory; I'm being stared down. I could not do more or better at this time, I felt uncomfortable.

I set this image in a vintage setting to make a statement: We have a lot to learn about our state of affairs. I show this by the juxtaposition of the RED SHOES against the homeless masses around him. The litter on the streets ads to our disregard of man.

I wish I had taken more time with this. I wish I did more to help this. Shamefully I turn away.

A Mighty Oak

A mighty oak stand proudly in a field waiting for the spring planting. I can envision mid day break with farm hands sitting beneath this tree cooling themselves in its shade.

I love the ability to bring in a bit of vignetting with the use of NIK EFEX. For capturing a feeling of yesterday a bit of sepia helps. Cloudless sky adds to the sense of a time gone by.

An OBSERVATION ABOUT A BOOK

This is all about Gary, A FRIEND AND MENTOR and his desire to get me to read. I am not a "READER" its a dyslexia issue. When I start to read I get tired and I often re-read the same lines. So for me everything I had to learn was taught to me in the streets. Of course a lot came vise a vie errors I made too many times not to get it right. So feeling like I needed something to do while I am on a hiatus from shooting, I bought George Barr's book "WHY PHOTOGRAPHS WORK". (Incidentally it's a perfect format for me, every article is only three pages long with pictures so I can read it without fear of loss in my comprehension of the points George strives to make).

I am on page 60 which means I've read about 8 or 9 different photographers. What I like most is that the lessons are not in a TECHY manner of writing but written as a conversation between George and me. He doesn't hear me, but he somehow does get to answering my questions. His selection of photographers is great. I have taken workshops with; TILLMAN CRANE in Maine & ELIZABETH OPALENIK in Woodstock, NY. As well I have spoken with Brigitte Carnochan because I love her work. So this is a very comfortable book for me, almost like Reading NEW YORK magazine or People.

What is most interesting is that his lessons are easily identified in some of my work and not seen in a lot of my work. As well as reading the photographer's comments on the piece shown adds much to the lessons to be learned and or understood if already in practice. For me, I especially like the line that prescribes not following the rules, since it is your own creation. This I think takes me to the lesson the Elizabeth Opalenik tried to instilled within me and that was "it doesn't have to be in focus!" This is confirmed by a lot of my flower work where I shoot soft for mood. Another lesson or phrase that resonates with me came from Dallas Logan who added this comment to my arsenal of WHY'S! Dallas said, the first part of a good photograph is the emotion, next comes the subject. Gotta love it when it is so easy to understand.

Thanks Gary, without you I'd be depressed over not knowing why I'm depressed. But now i know.

Yesterday I walked the streets of Cobble Hill. Cobble Hill a once family neighborhood with mom and pop stores and for the most part middle to lower income is now grown up to another upper income neighborhood of BROOKLYN. I feel this image captures both the PAST and PRESENT of this neighborhood.

Sitting in Starbucks and watched this patron work away at his keyboard and all the time held a pen in his mouth. No books at his side or on his lap, just the useless tool in his mouth.

It made me wonder if what I am doing is the same, walking around with the camera around my neck with no direction at hall so I end up in Starbucks taking these images that no one sees. I am wondering if it is all useless...

In my mind the B&W with over exposure push in the conversion is part of the message. The tool which now seems to be a cigarette looses its value, so possibly I am just taking up band space with this. Well I guess in a small way its good that we are only 3 or 4...

And no I am not depressed just would like more!

I was shooting a covered bridge upstate NY. Having always been interested in architecture, it is not surprising to me that I would be most interested in shooting the framing for this structure. In my review of my work I saw this cross frame. What I felt during the review of this image is that this Cross is showing NYC etched into it and that took me to the news of the day; the hype over the mosque that may be erected near ground zero.

This image awakes some spiritual part of me. Not being a Christian does not mean I do not understand the importance of the cross (crucifix) in Christianity. Therefore it is important to me that you know no disrespect was and is meant by this posting. It is just an artistic attempt on my part to stir an emotion in the viewer...

I took this on June 20, 2010 midday. My settings were F5.6 @ 1/30 sec on my tripod for this. The focal length is 50MM and i was in Manual mode to try to deal with the brightness of midday sun and darkness of the bridge. Still there was considerable contrast work needed to bring out all the detail. The images was converted to B&W using NIK SILVER EFEX (GREAT PROGRAM).

I miss the human touch, both physical and emotional. I am caught on a real estate roller coaster which is so exhausting. All that piled on top of an ailing body is depressing for me. So I sit where they say my name, where the warmth of a cup of coffee soothes my body, I am where the warmth of a smile helps me sit with my camera, I'm in STARBUCKS. A crying shame.

In my quest for purpose I've come along and photographed this pond tat is aptly named Ella. My granddaughter is named Ella so I really had no choice. I find solace in this environment, it peaceful. I love the beginning of the fall, the colors, earth tones are my favorite colors and here you'll see the start of the metamorphosis that occurs.. What splendor we live in and how often we don't notice.

Monday's Rant

It seems like every so often, and I will admit it is more frequent lately that I find no pleasure in my work. I think I should explain. I took several shots in a local park of a beautiful weeping willow hung over a pond on a beautiful sunny day. When I did this it felt good, I liked what I saw in the LCD and said to myself, "Great." And moved onto another thought and maybe another site. Four days later i look at the work of a week of shooting and I ended up dumping 80% of it. What gives?

So since this is my rant I'll answer the question of. "what gives?" In my mind i think I see much of my work being a series and not a solo. I don't think I can create the mindset of GOOD, BAD, UGLY BEAUTIFUL in a single image. Actually what I am trying to say is that I can't evoke the feeling I seek with I see it as a single image.

So I pose the question is this a sign of poor work? Am I missing my target in my work? Why don't I see or feel the beauty today that I felt last Tuesday, last month or last year in my recent work whereas I do feel it in my older work.

In my mind I think that possibly I move on to another phase of work, "THE SERIES". The series is where I need to post the group of five or ten related images to make a statement. I also feel that this is was first realized by me when I completed the DISTILLERY show. I had the twenty images laid out on the floor and I felt good about them. I held one in my hands and asked "what's wrong with me?" So is it the group dynamics (the power of many) or is it me???

B&W Yellow Rose

About this image. The shadow in the upper left hand corner was purposely left there as something that the rose is looking towards. I could have boosted it a bit but its is IMHO insignificant beyond just a shadow of the leaf. This is a MAJOR CROP of the original image. But beyond the crop, a hit on sharpening and the conversion no other post work was done.

I am not big on motivational talks, Always felt like I was being sold something and not given something. But occasionally I am blessed by a gift from another which I feel compelled to share. Today this gift came from my wife Joyce.

Elizabeth Gilbert is the author of "EAT PRAY LOVE". The book is a best seller and and now a good movie has been released. Joyce read the book and last week we both saw the movie. Some personal background: Joyce is a devotee at the Ashram SIDDA YOGA. The Guru at the Ashram is Gurumayi Chidvilasananda, it is said that Elizabeth Gilbert is a devotee as well (the connection). I on the otherhand subscribe my lifes path to the teachings of his HOLINESS THE 14TH DALIA LAMA. this keeps me out of trouble. But my point of this whole rant is that in this world there is a connection between all of us that attempt being "CREATIVE".

Elizabeth Gilbert did a TED talk whcih I must share with you. I feel it is importnat and a eye openner and only 18 minutes long. So please take this time to listen to her, I promise you that there is no sale pitch and there is nothing to buy, nor will you become a Buddhist or Jewish, or whatever; but you just may smile a bit and enjoy knowing that there is a human connection that binds us together.

Yes, I went back to the distillery to try to grab more shots to get a better show. No comment on how I did becuse I need twenty fours hours to digest it before commenting on it. BUT, (yes, I know that there is always a BUT that follows m y stories) today I was told by KAREN, the owner of a bakery in GARDINER, NY that I should check out the Grist Mill that is under construction; I did.

The water wheel is gone but the mills equipment for milling flour is in place. I was shooting some rushing water from above when a truck pulled up and a guy in shorts and black tea shirt gets out and enters the mill under construction. When he comes out I am with tripod is hand headed back to the car to go to the distillery (thirty feet away) when he strikes up a conversation. I repsond by asking how the work is coming and he invites me in.I revel at the possibility of seeing this B&B being converted in hopes of catching a shot here or there.... I ask him if he's the contractor and he responds, "THE OWNER". Then he tells me the heart aches of this project and proceeds to show me the entire place. Well bursting at the seams I ask, Can i take some shots, and he says "yes!". Here is one:

A lot of reading and writing to catch up on but thought I'd share one image with all. The few days in Montauk, NY produced 228 images. After a quick review I've narrow the choices for posting to this one:

Those that have own boats know the feeling of sitting in the fog. Here he stands and anticipates his departure.

IN this image there is the sense of loss that I feel since I no longer own a boat. Boating to me was just magnificent. I felt at home on the fly-bridge of my trawler and at home at the helm of my Baba 30' sailboat. I miss them and the life that I had with them. So in taking this image I am recording another part of ME that you don't know. By recording this image I am extending myself in opening up to you my heart and showing you a place that I once called home.

I will admit that it brought heartaches into a good life.. We survived and now I am boat-less and no longer ponder when to cast off the dock lines of my boat; only that of my sole as to when to seek new wonders.

A WORK IN PROGRESS!

Since my injury and illness i have made a habit of doing my walks with my camera. The result of this so far has been the Local Color flower work, street shots, etc. But at the same time I made my walking route to always come to the same conclusion: STARBUCKS.

I have taken over 350 shots to date and all taken the same way, surreptitiously. For the interior shots some are taken waist high, other from the table or counter top only three are taken at eye level. All of the work showing people on the outdoors is done from the camera sitting on the table top, set on P for programmed, 28 mm and click!!! Not very professional and clealy the reults show that since many are soft in the focus. I am sure the softness is due to the window have a vinyl cover causing a poor focus. So it is what it is and it is a story to me. Just not clear what the story is yet.

The first of the images are now posted on my PBASE SITE... I find using the slideshow feature the best way to get through them...

This is an old cemetery at Huguenot Street in New Paltz, NY. New Paltz is only 10 miles from the distillery and is one of the two towns we are considering moving to. As I passed this site, i felt something. I took a couple of shots, but this one is what I felt the strongest sensation around. I am showing it in both the original and in the BW versions and seek your comments, not necessarily help on it, although as always you are free to comment in any manner, but what if anything from either rendition do your feel...

Day one of my trip

We, Joyce and I were away watching my son's two dogs and a cat while he, wife, and the girls, Ella and Emily were gallivanting about Cape Cod, MA. What was in this for us is that his home is Plattekill, NY near where we will move, If we can sell our co-op. As well it is only 11.5 miles from the distillery where I took that barrel shots and hope to have a show. This will be my first report on how the five days went.

I arrived without coffee so my mind was dull. No workers had arrived and it was only me and the black cat and a lot of world around me. I spent time shooting the cat who only wanted to walk under the tripod. I caught her here off of the tripod. I did some landscape work to fill the time. But found my need for coffee more important than the next shot of the shutter. So off i went to the village of Gardiner, NY

In Gardiner there is a Village Market and Bakery that felt like home. I can't tell you what it was, but to me it was worth the daily ride just for coffee at 6:30 AM when they open. It was meant to be since the owner, Karen Schneck is also a Realtor and she helped us find a place to look at in New Paltz, NY. (nice place not for us). So my devotion to my work was divided between the distillery and the bakery. All of a sudden it was an effort to do my photos, and less of an effort to gain weight. But back to the distillery i went...

When I arrived back one of the workers was there, so I had access to the brew room. The scent of yeast brewing filled my nostrils filled my head as I enter the loft space. I did a lot of work in and around the stills and after about an hour or so i was ready to call it a day. As I walked to the steps i saw this and knew it was my last shot for the day.

I call this Shofar. At this point I packed up and went backt othe bakery for more conversation and a cold drink to enjoy on my way back to the house to pick up Joyce... It was a exciting day for me and most enjoyable....

We visited the Woodstock Animal Rescue compound. The young lady featured here was our tour guide. She knew I was taking her picture and most times that deters me, but I need to try to capture her essence for my safe keeping.

My return visit

I returned to the distillery in hope to be able to find some more magic. I was very pleased when I entered the store that Luc, the clerk remembered me. I explained that many of the shots I took on my last visit suffered from shake. I showed her the one shot I published on my blog since the images is on my phone. She loved it that's when I asked permission to do another round using my tripod to which she said, "SURE!!!"

So out to the car to fetch my gear. 40 shots, slow shutter speed, and different angles: the result is this and it is really not a heart warmer for me. The point here is often a return trip doesn't meet the anticipation of what is in your mind from your first visit. I think that when you remove the spontaneity from it, you remove some of the feelings and it becomes a studio job... Not that I am bad mouthing studio work, its is just that I need my heart to sing to me. And on this visit to TUTHILLTOWN Spirits it didn't the Muse remained silent...

The path to enlightenment is often filled with obstacles, some difficult to pass, others delightful. Here the Cherry blossoms stall your progress and you are given an opportunity to stop and to observe the beauty all around you.

I find this an important lesson in life; the ability to see that which is right in front of my nose. I've been going through a long battle to get pass some minor, but lasting and painful nerve damage and I have often forget to see and pay respect to the beauty of life in front of my nose. So when I Amida Buddha sitting in the garden with the path in front of him, I saw this as a reminder to look at life and its beauty. I hope you see it in your backyard as well...
